Telehandler's are unique in that their advantage is also their largest drawback: since the boom raises or extends when the equipment is bearing a load, it also acts as a lever and causes the vehicle to become somewhat unbalanced, despite the rear counterweights. This translates to the lifting capacity decreasing quickly as the working radius increases. The working radius is the distance between the center of the load and the front of the wheels.
When it is completely extended with a low boom angle for instance, the telehandler will only have a four hundred pound weight capacity, while a retracted boom can support weights as much as 5000 lb. The same unit with a five thousand pound lift capacity that has the boom retracted may be able to easily support as much as 10,000 lb. with the boom raised up to 70.
The Matbro Company within Horley, Surrey, England initially pioneered telehandlers. These equipment were developed from their articulated cross country forestry forklifts. At first, they had a centrally mounted boom design on the front section. This positioned the cab of the driver on the equipment's back part, as in the Teleram 40 model. The rigid chassis design with a rear mounted boom and the cab located on the side has since become more popular.

The telehandler's triangular base comprises the two front wheels and the rear-axle pivot point. The rear axles usually oscillates, hence the rear wheels are not considered part of the base. The telehandler remains upright so long as the machine's center of gravity, which is defined as the point in 3 dimensions around which the weight of the equipment is balanced, stays oriented in the stability triangle.
Several of the main parts requiring attention during maintenance consist of the gauges, horn, safety warning devices, the overhead guard and the lights. Any faulty components or burnt out light bulbs must be replaced as soon as they are noticed. It is also imperative to check the wiring.
The battery compartment terminals must be cleaned after the above components have been inspected carefully. If the terminals are not clean, be sure to clean them well. Each and every cell of the battery should be inspected so as to make certain that the fill level is topped up to the regulated amount.
