Forklift Truck Training Program
Operators should undergo training on an industrial-powered forklift, or lift truck in order to receive forklift operator certification. The training program must be specific to the forklift type and attachments that you will be utilizing on the job location. Training should also reflect the setting wherein you will be working. Forklift safety should be a main concern for both the trainer and the operator trainee.
General Qualifications
Prior to assuming any operator duties, all forklift drivers should undergo training and certification. Basic credentials for using a forklift include an age minimum of eighteen years and the physical capacity to control and operate the unit safely.
Pedestrian Safety
The safety of pedestrians should be a main concern of any forklift driver. Pedestrians in the vicinity of the forklift are at risk of death or injury from getting hit by the machinery or its attachments. Pedestrians should always have the right of way, and forklift operators should honk their horns when working near pedestrians or at crosswalks or intersections.
Weather Conditions
Forklift mishaps frequently happen on loading docks. These areas become hazardous if rain leaks in through open dock doors making the floor really slippery. Wet floor conditions can lead to a hazard and operators need to know possible hazards when working in loading dock areas.
Certification
Forklift certification programs include a combination of classroom instruction and practical training tailored to the specific needs of the workplace. Training should be completed on the forklift type and attachments which would be used by the trainee in the workplace.
Mishaps
Each year roughly 100 individuals die in forklift accidents. There are one hundred thousand forklift injuries reported each and every year. Nearly all of these accidents could be prevented with proper operator training and attention to safety.

Telescopic Forklifts
Telescopic forklift models are outfitted with a pronged lift on an arm that extends over the top of the truck offering versatility and great height. The crane, or arm, is called a telescopic boom. The boom enables the individual using it to maintain a high degree of control while raising the load to great heights. Regular forklifts can not move the load away from and towards the cab of the forklift, whereas a telescopic forklift can allow that movement. The telescopic forklift is usually utilized in both agriculture and construction. It is better for applications where greater lift and control is needed.
In situations needing high volume carton handling, hydraulic attachments called forklift carton clamp attachments are better. The attachment has arm pads with four way reversible rubber linings that enable the operator to utilize uniform clamping force when picking up a load. It is available with a backrest which protects the cargo from damage.
A slip sheet attachment fits onto a slip sheet forklift. It is utilized for storing systems which don't use pallets. The attachment clamps onto the slip sheet and pulls it onto the forklift forks. This type of system is handy for overseas shipments and intra-corporate deliveries.
A man basket is a lift platform meant specifically to lift staff. The basket attaches to the forks on the forklift, held in with a strap or chain which is to be directly secured to the forklift carriage. The platform has railings to protect the employees from falling to the ground. Brackets on the platform are utilized for fastening the safety harness of the worker.
